Today (21 November 2017) Thai Royal Navy host the 1st ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise. 9 ASEAN Navies 14 ships will join the event (except Laos). The theme of this naval exercise will be coincided with the main theme from the 11th ASEAN Navy Chiefs’ Meeting ‘Protection and preservation of the marine environment’. The result of this naval exercise will allow ASEAN Navy to operate together in terms of resources and peace protection in regional level.

The 1st ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise is significant and receive lots attention from foreign media as this huge event consists of harmonious participation from ASEAN navies. The naval exercise occurs once in every 3 years, in which Royal Thai Navy is the host for this 1st ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise. Before all countries can participate together, there is an establishment of naval exercise procedures for the same understanding and standard. This procedure aims to increase knowledge and understanding, and develop maritime operational capability from basic to advanced level from operating together between ASEAN nations to strengthen maritime stability. Main objective of the 1st ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise is to promote multilateral cooperation to prevent the destruction of maritime resources and environment, coinciding with the main theme from the 11th ASEAN Navy Chiefs’ Meeting ‘Protection and preservation of the marine environment’, in which the Royal Thai Navy is the host.

The 1st ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise is divided into 3 parts.

  1. 14-16 November 2017 – Harbor phase. Exchange understanding and knowledge
  2. 21 November 2017 – Sea phase
  3. 22 – 23 November 2017 – Post-Exercise Debriefing and ASEAN Naval ships depart
